Our clients were requiring more space for their expanding family and guests within their existing (recently remodeled) mid-century A.D. Stenger home. We converted the existing single-family residence into a multi-generational compound centered on the addition of a pool and guest house. The existing home had not previously taken advantage of the natural and insular environment provided by heavy forestation in an otherwise non-secluded suburban neighborhood within close proximity to downtown. We converted the existing garage into a jack-and-jill suite for the children. We added glass window boxes in the bedrooms for reading and relaxing in nature. In the spirit of the original design, we stayed true to mid-century modern principles of clean spatial organization and honest materiality, but with a greater focus on connection with the outdoors.
